The National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture at Alabama State University will host a juried art exhibit featuring images from the National Alliance of Artists from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (NAAHBCU).
The theme for the exhibit, which is free and open to the public, is “The 60th Anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott: The Lessons and the Legacy.”
The exhibit opening and reception will be held Sunday, February 28 at 3 p.m., and the exhibit will run from Monday, February 29 through Friday, June 10, excluding Wednesdays, Sundays and holidays.
The works of 16 African-American artists will be on display: Marvette Aldrich, Charmagne Andrews, Henry M. Blackmon III, William Colvin, Phillip Dotson, Hassan Kirkland, Desmond McFarlane, Felix Moorer, Marcella H. Muhammad, Fredrick Pellum, Steve Prince, Lee A. Ransaw, Clarence Talley, Sr., Cleve Webber, Samuel O. Williams, and Dennis Winston.
Afrofuturism Rising: Black Art Across the Spectrum

NAAHBCU and Fort Valley State University is exploring Afrofuturism through traditional and contemporary visual art. Afrofuturism is defined as an aesthetic tradition used to examine, interrogate and re-imagine dominate cultural narratives of Black experiences across the Diaspora. Afro futurism infuses elements of technology, music and pop culture, Afrocentrism, science fiction, magical realism, historical fantasy and is effective in helping visual artists articulate new subjectivities as well as new realities.
